LRB article on why we do NOT need market principles in universities
Explains why that neoliberal canard - that private sector competition in universities drives up academic standards, just look at the system in the US! - is a load of hooey. Turns out it's economically illiterate as well as fatal for academic standards; the cost goes up and money gets siphoned off to fund 'student experience' [social events, and so forth], whilst lecturers are under pressure to inflate grades because people paying hundreds of thousands of dollars on their degree don't expect to scrape a qualification.
"The partially privatised university system in the United States is not ‘the best of the best’. In terms of value for money, the British system is far better, and probably the best in the world".
Imagine that.
