The
Working Class Movement Library's current exhibition showcases the talents of artists based in Salford's
Islington Mill and the area's historic link to political activism. 'Object Lessons' is the result of a collaboration between the two institutions, in which the artists produced objects, illustrations, and prints inspired by the social movements of the past and objects in the library. The exhibition is both informative of the past and firmly in the present; Christine Baldwin's pottery demands the saving of Salford's Maternity Unit and that the bankers pay up, and Fraser Chapman's clever twist on the idea of the 'social fabric' has resulted in a range of printed clothing that documents protest movements of our time.
The other artists participating in the exhibition are Amy Pennington, Matthew Walkerdine, Jess Higgins, Anna Beam, David Bailey, and Maurice Carlin.
The artists at Islington Mill also very kindly collected money for the recent occupation at Manchester, which helped subsidise coach seats for students going to the demonstration against the fees rise in London on the 9th of December. Thank you!
The exhibition is on until Wednesday 26th January, so get there soon! (Exhibition space open Wednesdays to Fridays, from 1pm to 5pm).
